West Virginia got their scoring started in the Bottom of the 1st. With Matt Blackham on the mound for Brooklyn, Kevin Kramer led off the game with a walk. Kevin Newman lay down a bunt with 2 strikes and bunted it foul for an out. Kramer stole 2nd and went to 3rd on a throwing error by C Brandon Brosher. Blackham struck out Logan Hill, but gave up a single to Ty Moore to score Kramer. Blackham got Albert Baur to ground to end the inning.
The Cyclones trailed 1-0 very briefly, as Jeff Diehl led off the Top of the 2nd with a homer to left off Black Bears starter Dario Agrazal. David Thompson singled to right, but a Brandon Brosher ground out got him at 2nd. Ozzie Caraballo, who came in before the start of the game for Bernal who was injured, went down swinging, but Perez singled, moving Brosher to 2nd. Will Fulmer, who made his 1st appearance since June 29th, grounded out to end the inning.
The Black Bears took the lead for good in the Bottom of the 2nd. Ryan Nagle reached on an error by 2B Will Fulmer. Casey Hughston singled, moving Nagel to 3rd. Christian Kelley singled to center, scoring Nagle and moving Hughston to 2nd. Mitchell Tolman reached on a bunt single, loading the bases. Blackham gave up 2 Wild Pitches when Kramer was up, which allowed Hughston to score and moved Kelley to 3rd & Tolman to 2nd. Kramer singled to score Kelley.
Newman grounded into a force out which got Tolman at 3rd. A double steal by the “Seinfeld Combo” of Kramer & Newman made it 2nd & 3rd. Hill singled to score both Kramer & Newman. Ty Moore singled, moving Hill to 2nd, and that would be all for Blackham, as Tom Gamboa called in Dawrin Frias to pitch. Frias struck out Baur & Nagle to end the inning, but the Cyclones trailed 6-1.
The Cyclones got runners to 2nd & 3rd in the Top of the 3rd, but failed to score.
West Virginia continued giving Brooklyn problems in the Bottom of the 3rd. Kelley hit a 1-out single to right, and Tolman was hit by a pitch. Kramer flew out for out #1. Frias attempted a pickoff, but an error allowed Kelley to score and sent Tolman to 3rd. A wild pitch by Frias sent Tolman home. Newman was hit by a pitch. He would steal both 2nd & 3rd, and Logan Hill would walk, but Frias got Moore to ground out to end the inning with the Cyclones down 8-1.
The Cyclones got a runner to 3rd in the Top of the 5th, but failed to score that time, as well as the rest of the game, as they would lose 8-1.
The Cyclones look to avoid a sweep as they take on the Black Bears in the final game of the series tomorrow.
Manuel Hilario was ejected by HP umpire Donnie Smith in the Top of the 9th.
