The Cyclones were finally able to snap their 6-game losing streak last night in front of a crowd of 6,001 at MCU Park. The night featured celebrities, ejections and the 4 millionth fan to enter MCU Park.
The fireworks started before the anthem was sung, as Cyclones Manager Tom Gamboa was ejected during the lineup card exchange by 1B umpire David Martinez. Gamboa and Martinez were still at odds from a game in West Virginia which saw Gamboa ejected.
With Edgardo Alfonzo now managing for the night, the Cyclones took an early lead in the Bottom of the 1st. With Kevin Steen on the hill for Lowell, Alfredo Reyes led off with a single to right and Will Fulmer was hit by pitch, moving Reyes to 2nd. All Star Vinny Siena tripled to the right field corner, scoring Reyes & Fulmer. Jeff Diehl was called out on strikes, but David Thompson drew a walk. A wild pitch by Steen sent Siena home and Thompson to 2nd. Brandon Brosher walked, but Hengelbert Rojas hit into an inning ending double play.
Cyclones starter Tyler Badamo would give up his 1 run of the night in the Top of the 2nd. Josh Ockimey hit a 1-out double to right and Tate Matheny doubled him in to make it 3-1. Badamo got out of the jam by getting Kyri Washington to ground out and struck out Austin Rei.
The Cyclones had a chance in the Bottom of the 4th to widen the lead, as Brosher was hit by pitch and Rojas singled to make it 1st & 2nd. However, Zach Mathieu hit into yet another double play that did sent Brosher to 3rd. Enmanuel Zabala popped out to end the inning.
In the Bottom of the 5th, Daniel Zandona came in to pitch for the Spinners.
Tyler Badamo was lifted at 6 innings, giving up just 1 run, 2 hits and striking out 5. While his pitch count was 64, he had done his job. Craig Missigman was called in and pitched a shutout Top of the 7th. PJ Conlon came in to pitch the Top of the 8th and struck out all 3 batters he faced.
The Bottom of the 8th saw an on-field meltdown that MCU Park has never seen, despite drawing 4 million fans. Jeff Diehl was called out on strikes, giving himself a golden sombrero for the night. Having broken his bat over his knee in the Bottom of the 6th, he mouthed off to home plate umpire Donnie Smith and was ejected. Diehl proceeded to curse out and flip off Smith, and threw 2 water coolers from the dugout onto the field.
When he finally left the dugout, Pedro Perez replaced him in left and Carlos Valdez threw out perfect Top of the 9th, ending the Cyclones losing streak and bringing the Cyclones within 2.5 games of 1st place.
The Cyclones close out the 2 game homestand with a Jersday Thursday, as the 1st 3,000 fans into MCU Park will receive a pinstripe jersey, courtesy Domino’s Pizza.
