This week’s Brooklyn Baseball Banter Fan of the Week goes to a fan who might not be the most vocal or most known, but he travels across 2 rivers to support his team. He is exceedingly loyal to the Brooklyn Cyclones.
Doug Maloney, a resident of Hoboken, NJ is one of the most upbeat Brooklyn Cyclones you will meet at a game.
Despite his incredibly youthful appearance, Doug is 43 years young and has been a New York Mets fan since he was 7, which, along with his love of Coney Island, led to him becoming a Cyclones fan during the 2002 season.
During that season, he attended his 1st Cyclones game at MCU Park, or as it was called then, KeySpan Park. Doug was really impressed in the family atmosphere of the place, the excellent seats in the ballpark, the quality of play and the entertainment provided by many, including Sandy the Seagull.
Doug does not have a ticket plan with the Cyclones. When he goes to a game, he generally buys a ticket at the window sits behind home plate, though he has considered trying other sections in the ballpark. On his way in, he makes sure to stop & get some pictures with King Henry, Sandy, Pee Wee and the Beach Bums
Doug generally likes to ride the Coney Island Cyclone before the game for good luck.
Doug’s favorite managers so far have been Wally Backman and Tom Gamboa. He also loves seeing former Met Edgardo Alfonzo serve as a Brooklyn Cyclones coach. Some of his favorite Cyclones include Michael Conforto, Amed Rosario, Jhoan Urena, & Jeff Diehl. Doug’s favorite foods to eat at MCU Park are the hot pretzels and hamburgers. His favorite giveaways items are Jerseys and T-shirts, which he wears year round.
His favorite memory of all the Cyclones games he has attended came during a home game against the Tigers in 2015. He caught a foul ball hit by Zach Mathieu and managed to catch a shirt during the game.
When the Cyclones go on the road to Staten Island, Doug tries to make the trip to RCB Ballpark and cheer for the Brooklyn Cyclones. He enjoys helping fellow Cyclones fans in attendance hold up the Brooklyn Cyclones banners. He enjoyed seeing the Cyclones beat the Staten Island Yankees on their failed #BeatBKLYN Night.
Doug also attended a number of Brooklyn Bolts games when they played at MCU Park, even braving the horrid weather some nights.
Those who are Facebook friends with Doug always see pictures of him at various places and sporting events. A noticeable trait of those pics is how Doug is always giving his signature wide smile, a thumbs up or open arms, and he is usually seen wearing gear of the Mets, Cyclones or Bolts.
This made selection of the following 10 images a hard, but enjoyable process.
