BakcgroundIn the lobby of MCU Park, a huge mural hangs on the wall with the faces of the 53 Brooklyn Cyclones to play in the Major Leagues.

Three more faces will be added this week, as a trio of Brooklyn Cyclones from the Rich Donnelly era are expected to make their Major League debuts this week.

Once all three pitch, this will bring the total number of Brooklyn Cyclones to appear in at least one Majors League Baseball game to 56.


John GantJohn Gant, who pitched in Brooklyn in 2013, will make his debut with the Atlanta Braves.

Gant was drafted by the New York Mets in the 21st round of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft from Wiregrass Ranch HS in Wesley Chapel, FL. Gant spent the 2013 season in Brooklyn. During that season, he went 6-4 in 13 starts, posting an ERA of 2.89. He gave up 53 hits, 30 runs, 23 earned, walking 28 & striking out 81. He only gave up 1 homer all season and was a member of the 2012 NYPL NL All Star Team.

Gant is the 2nd member of the 2013 Brooklyn Cyclones to play in the Majors, joining Akeel Morris.

Gant also pitched for the GCL Mets, Kingsport Mets, Savannah Sand Gnats, St. Lucie Mets & Binghamton Mets. Gant was traded to the Braves on July 25th, along with Rob Whalen for Kelly Johnson & Juan Uribe.


Luis CessaLuis Cessa will make his debut with the New York Yankees, being the 1st Cyclone to play for the Yankees.

Luis Cessa spent the 2012 season in Brooklyn, going 5-4  in 13 games. He tossed 72.1 innings, giving up 21 runs and striking out 44 while posting an ERA of 2.49.

Cessa also played for the DSL & GCL Mets in 2011. He was promoted to Savannah in 2013 and split 2014 with St. Lucie & Binghamton. He spent 2015 with Binghamton & Las Vegas, before being traded for Yoenis Cespedes at the trade deadline before being traded to the Yankees this past offseason.


Matt BowmanMatt Bowman will be making his debut with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Mets drafted Bowman in the 13th round of the 2012 MLB Draft from Princeton University in New Jersey.

Bowman appeared in 12 games for the Cyclones in 2012, starting 1. He pitched 29.1 innings, giving up 26 hits and 9 runs while striking out 30 to post an ERA of 2.76. He went 2-2 with 3 saves.

Bowman worked his way up the ladder, pitching in Savannah, St. Lucie, Binghamton and Las Vegas.

Bowman was selected by the Cardinals in 2015 Rule 5 Draft.


Cessa & Bowman are the 3rd & 4th members of the 2012 Brooklyn Cyclones to make the Majors, joining Hansel Robles and Kevin Plawecki


IN OTHER CYCLONES NEWS:

  • Gaither Bumgardner, who was traded to Anaheim in the middle of last season, was released by the Angels.
  • Desmond Lindsay will be out a few days, as he has a minor calf issue.
  • Matt Blackham has an elbow issue and will be sidelined for a few months. He is possibly returning to Brooklyn this season.
  • Darin Gorski, who spent the 2009 season in Brooklyn, has joined the nearby Somerset Patriots.
