The Cyclones got a big win tonight, as Brandon Brosher’s power and Gene Cone’s good eyes lifted the Brooklyn Cyclones to a win over a rival of theirs in the McNamara Division, the Aberdeen Ironbirds in another extra inning game.
The Cyclones wasted a chance in the Top of the 1st off Ironbirds starter Alex Wells. Gene Cone led off the game with single to center. Nick Sergakis tried to lay down a bunt, but he popped it up and C Stuart Levy caught it in foul territory. Colby Woodmansee reached on a fielding error by 3B Frank Crinella, sending Cone to 2nd. Pete Alonso flew out to center, moving Cone to 3rd. Ali Sanchez looked at Strike 3 to end the inning.
Nabil Crismatt ran into trouble in the Bottom of the 1st. On his 2nd pitch of the game, Cole Billingsley homered off Crismatt to make it 1-0. Chris Clare drew a walk and a ground out by Alejandro Juvier moved Clare to 2nd. A passed ball sent Clare to 3rd and Ryan McKenna singled to right, scoring Clare. McKenna stole 2nd and a single by Jaylen Ferguson moved McKenna to 3rd. Jason Heinrich hit a sac fly that scored McKenna to make it 3-0. Stuart Levy grounded into a force out to end the inning.
Both Wells and Crismatt settled down and pitched lights out. After 5 innings, Crismatt was pulled for Dillon Becker, who pitched a scoreless Bottom of the 6th.
Alonso led off the Top of the 7th with a double. Ali Sanchez grounded out to the pitcher, keeping Alonso at 2nd. Jacob Zanon singled to center, scoring Alonso to make it 3-1. That would be it for wells, as Xavier Borde was called in to pitch. Zanon would steal 2nd, but Jay Jabs struck out for the 2nd out. Brandon Brosher blasted a 2-run homer to deep left center field to tie the game. Arnaldo Berrios drew a walk, but was left there, as Gene Cone popped out to end the inning.
Joel Huertas came in to pitch the Bottom of the 7th and ran into trouble. After striking out Heinrich to start the inning, he walked Levy and gave up a triple to Ronarsy Ledesma to make it 4-3. Kirvin Moesquit hit a sac fly to right to score Ledesma. Billingsley doubled, but was left at 2nd, as Chris Clare grounded out to end the inning.
Garrett Cortright came in to pitch the Top of the 8th and retired the Cyclones in order.
After a scoreless Bottom of the 8th from Huertas, Zanon hit a 1-out single in the Top of the 9th and took 2nd on a ground-out by Jabs. Brosher belted another homer, to score Zanon again, and once again, tie the game for Brooklyn. Berrios reached on an infield hit and a single by Cone made it 1st & 3rd. However, Sergakis flew out to end the inning.
Huertas pitched a perfect Bottom of the 9th, sending another Brooklyn Cyclones game in to extra innings. Daniel Ayers came in to pitch the Top of the 10th and retired the side in order. Huertas threw a scoreless Bottom of the 10th to keep the game going.
Zanon led off the Top of the 11th with a walk. A single by Jabs sent Zanon to 3rd and a walk to Brosher loaded the bases. Berrios hit the ball to SS Chris Clare, who fired home to get the out. Cone drew a bases-loaded walk to score Jabs and give Brooklyn a 6-5 lead. Sergakis hit the ball to 3B Kirvin Moesquit who fired home for the 2nd out. Woodmansee went down swinging, leaving the bases loaded.
With the slimmest of leads possible, Joe Zanghi took the mound to close it out. Zanghi pitched the shutout Bottom of the 11th, striking out all 3 Ironbirds he faced to collect his 1st save of 2016.
With the win, the Cyclones move into 3rd place in the McNamara Division. They will face off against the Ironbirds for the 2nd game of the series tomorrow. RHP Erik Manoah (1-1, 6.52) will take the mound against LHP Travis Seabrooke (1-2, 4.12). First pitch is at 7:05 PM
