Yesterday, the New York Mets promoted LHP Thomas Szapucki from the Kingsport Mets to the Brooklyn Cyclones.
Szapucki (pronounced Za-Puck-ee) is expected to be a starter in the Brooklyn Cyclones rotation, replacing Joel Huertas. The new rotation is expected to be Gabriel Llanes, Harol Gonzalez, Merandy Gonzalez, Nabil Crismatt, Thomas Szapucki & Erik Manoah.
Szapucki was drafted by the New York Mets in the 5th Round of the 2015 MLB Draft out of William T. Dwyer High School in West Palm Beach, FL.
Szapucki began his Mets career with the GCL Mets a year ago this week, appearing in 3 games. Szapucki struggled, as he posted an ERA of 15.43 in 2.1 innings pitched.
However, in 5 games this season with the Kingsport Mets, Szapucki has posted a record of 2-1 with an impressive ERA of 0.62, allowing just 2 earned runs in 29 innings pitched. He also struck out 47 batters he faced, averaging 14.4 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched. He has also given up just 16 hits and 9 walks, good for a WHIP of 0.96.
Szapucki is currently rated by MLB.com to be the Mets 17th best prospect in the system. The only other current member of the Brooklyn Cyclones to appear on the list is Ali Sanchez at #15.
Szapucki will wear 28 on his jersey.
