qmeme_1469197989413_359The Brooklyn Cyclones had the Luck of the Irish on their side last night, as they managed to hold on to a tight lead in the 9th to take an important win against the Aberdeen Ironbirds on Irish Heritage Night. It was a real nail-biter, as the team did waste chances and nearly blew the game.

Michael Paez drew a walk in the Bottom of the 4th off reliever Cody Dube, who replaced starter Lucas Humpal and Colby Woodmansee popped out in foul territory to 1B Collin Woody, who threw to 2B Alejandro Juvier who tagged out Paez out at 2nd.

The Cyclones wasted a huge opportunity in the Bottom of the 5th. Pete Alonso & Ali Sanchez led off the inning with singles to make it 1st & 3rd. Blake Tiberi singled to right, scoring Alonso to make it 1-0 and moving Sanchez to 2nd. Jacob Zanon singled to shallow center to load the bases. However, the team struggled with runners in scoring position, as both Jay Jabs & Arnaldo Berrios struck out swinging and Gene Cone popped out, leaving the bases loaded.

Xavier Borde came in to pitch the Bottom of the 6th and ran into trouble from the start. Paez hit his 1st career homer to left, make it a 2-nothing game. Woodmansee singled to left and a walk by Alonso moved Woodmansee to 2nd. Borde was pulled from the game for Andrew Elliott. Ali Sanchez grounds into a force out, sending Woodmansee to 3rd and nailing Alonso at 2nd. Tiberi hit a sac fly to center to score Woodmansee and make it 3-0. Zanon grounded out, ending the inning.

From the start, Brooklyn Cyclones starter Harol Gonzalez was as lights out as he was a week ago. He allowed just 5 hits and a walk while striking out 9 in 7.2 innings of work.

Things got interesting in the Top of the 9th. With Joseph Zanghi in, Ryan McKenna was hit by pitch. After striking out Cole Billingsley & Alejandro Juvier, Jason Heinrich walked. Jaylen Ferguson doubled to left, scoring Ryan McKenna and moving Heinrich to 3rd. Austin McGeorge was called in to finish it off. Chris Clare drew a walk and Seamus Curran was sent in to pinch hit for Daniel Fajardo (something the Mets don’t allow Tom Gamboa to do).

Curran hit the ball to Michael Paez at 2nd, who misplayed it, allowing Heinrich to score. However, Paez threw home and Ali Sanchez tagged out Jaylen Ferguson to end the game, giving the Cyclones a 3-2 victory.
