The Cyclones got a good win tonight against the Vermont Lake Monsters, as they avoided a common baseball mistake where teams get shutout after a huge blowout win.
With a crowd of 4,831 on hand, 2,000 of them received Joe Torre Brooklyn Cadet Bobbleheads on their way in to MCU Park. The fans were also treated to a celebrity softball game, which saw Team Torre beat Team Scotto by a score of 3-1 in 4 innings. Featured in the game were familiar names such as Nelson Figueroa, John Wallace; Rosanna Scotto, Greg Kelly & Scotty the Leprechaun.
Once the actual Minor League game began, the Cyclones would finally get on the scoreboard in the Bottom of the 2nd off Lake Monsters starter Logan Shore. Desmond Lindsay hit a 1-out single to right. Michael Paez singled to right, sending Lindsay to 3rd, with Paez going to 2nd on the throw. Jay Jabs walked to load the bases. Brandon Brosher, in his 1st game back at MCU Park, singled to center, scoring & Paez scores to make it 2-0. Ali Sanchez grounded out, but made it 2nd & 3rd. Gene Cone struck out to end the inning, and Shore would be pulled the following inning.
With Ivan Andueza pitching his 4th inning of work for the Lake Monsters, Lindsay led off with a homer to left, his 2nd on the season to make it 3-0.
Harol Gonzalez got the start for the Cyclones and, as always, dominated from the start. The only trouble he ran into was in the Top of the 7th. Tyler Ramirez hit a 1-out single to center. JaVon Shelby was called out on strikes for the 2nd out. A passed ball sent Ramirez to 2nd. Nick Collins singled to left and LF Jay Jabs got the ball and fired home to nail Ramirez at the plate to end the inning.
After 7 specular innings of work, starter Harol Gonzalez was pulled from the game, leaving a pitching line of 7 shutout innings, 4 hits, a walk and 7 strikeouts. Gary Cornish came in to pitch the Top of the 8th. While he allowed two runners to reach base, none of them scored.
The Top of the 9th saw Darryl Knight came in for Pete Alonso. Alonso left the game, as he had jammed a pinkie sliding into 2B on the double in the Bottom of the 6th. While he remained in the game, his finger had become swollen and discolored, so he was removed from the game.
Cornish pitched his 2nd shutout inning, enough to earn himself his 2nd save of the season, as Brooklyn took the series opener 3-0.
The Cyclones be back in action tonight for 90s & Nickelodeon Night. RHP Merandy Gonzalez (4-2, 3.54) will face off against RHP Jesus Zambrano (2-2, 5.53). For all the details, CLICK HERE.
