Rob Weiner Batting PracticeTwo of the many great perks Season Ticket Holders for the Brooklyn Cyclones get to enjoy are a Barbecue with the players and the ability to take Batting Practice on the field of MCU Park.

However, it can be hard to enjoy both of these events. In many seasons, including the 2016 season, both events occurred simultaneously.

Many factors go in to choosing when to hold these events. The team need to make sure of the following things.

  1. The field will be available for fans to take Batting Practice.
  2. The players are available to attend the Barbecue, meaning no bus trip after the game.
  3. The ballpark staff can be prepared to make the food.
  4. The front office can host Batting Practice.
  5. It is done on a date that many of the fans can come to MCU Park.

The Cyclones have tried a few methods to making everyone happy.

1: Barbecue and Batting Practice Simultaneously

They have done this both before and after a home game, almost always a Sunday. However, some people wanted to take Batting Practice and play the field, and therefore didn’t get any food. Some people got food and mingled with the players, did not get to bat.

When the team did it this season, people who did not have passes for it managed to stay in the ballpark. There were also those who were unhappy it was after a game, as they spent money on food during the game.

2: Barbecue and Batting Practice Held Separately.

The team tried this method in 2014 & 2015. The barbecue would be held on a Sunday before a game, just like years past. The batting practice would be held on a separate weeknight while the team was on the road. Sadly, rain or bad forecasts postponed Batting Practice.

This was not something a number of fans were in favor of, as many who did not attend mentioned they would need to make an extra trip to MCU Park, on a weeknight, and spend time & money on getting there.

During 2015, the team scheduled it on a day that the Cyclones were playing at the Staten Island Yankees, and many fans had to make a choice on either taking Batting Practice, or seeing the Cyclones play. In the end, the forecast looked bad and the Batting Practice was postponed, despite the fact the game in RCB Ballpark was played. Batting Practice would be held in October.

Pre-Game Barbeque & Post-Game Batting Practice on Separate Days

Now that the 2017 schedule has come out, schedule the Barbecue before a 4:00 PM Sunday game. That way fans can arrive around 1:00 PM for it, eat before the game and mingle with the players. No extra trips are required for any of the fans.

June 25th, July 16th, & August 6th are all Sunday home games at 4:00 PM that do not follow a Saturday road game, or precede a Monday road game. July 9th could also work, as the team is in Staten Island on the 8th & has the 10th as a travel day.

Schedule the Batting Practice following the 1:00 PM Sunday game on July 2nd, so it starts roughly around 4:00 PM. If people want to skip Batting Practice, they can simply leave.
