Earlier today, Relay for Life @ MCU Park began its planning for the 2017 Relay. Relay for Life, which is a fundraising event run by the American Cancer Society, helps those with any form of cancer.
Relay for Life Events generally consist of a Survivor Dinner, Survivor Lap (the Relay itself), a Luminaria Ceremony to remember those who have lose their lives to cancer. There is also a “Fight Back” Ceremony, in which participants pledge to take specific actions against cancer.
These events conclude with a Closing Ceremony, where those excelled in the Relay event are generally given awards for all their hard work.
The communal coffee and bagels breakfast, which brought over two dozen attendees from the area, will begin working on both the ACS Relay. The Relay will take place on Saturday, June 10th, 2017 at MCU Park, 9 days before the start of the 2017 Brooklyn Cyclones season.
Many of the attendees were either cancer survivors, cancer patients, relatives of those with cancer, as well as those who have good connections and can spread the word or help with fundraising.
Joe Gillette, who runs the local Relay for Life chapter for the American Cancer Society explained to those in attendance that the they have branded the local chapter from Relay for Bergen Beach to Relay for Life @ MCU Park.
Joe explained to everyone that by renaming the local chapter, it will attract more people, not just those in Bergen Beach & Bay Ridge.
He also stated just how MCU Park brings many baseball fans from the local area together and represents the great borough of Brooklyn, this will hopefully attract people from all over the borough.
Joe also unveiled the new Relay for Life @ MCU Park logo, which consists of a purple ribbon circling the Parachute Jump, which towers over MCU Park.
Relay for Life @ MCU Park will also work with the Brooklyn Cyclones on expanding its reach.
Joe also informed everyone that there will be another Relay for Life Night at a Cyclones game this summer. There are also plans for the Cyclones to wear special jerseys with the names of cancer victims again. The Cyclones wore special Relay for Life Jerseys in 2015 & 2016.
