This Week at MCU Park: 2/26/2017

College MCU ParkThis busy week will bring 6 college baseball games to MCU Park over the course of 5 days before a break of over two weeks.

The NYU Violets will begin their 3rd season at MCU Park with 18 new players on the roster. They are coming off a 20-win season that saw their catcher, CJ Picerni, drafted by the Nationals.

3rd Year Head Coach Doug Kimbler has also made some changes to his coaching staff, adding Cyclones Ticket Rep & former NYIT player Tommy Cardona following the departures of Jake Chaplin & Ray Kim from his staff.

Bearcats Win Season Opener Before Fog Cancels 2nd Game

After 5 long months, baseball finally returned to MCU Park this afternoon as the Baruch Bearcats faced off with the Old Westbury Panthers on a very foggy afternoon.

Despite the less than ideal conditions to play in, Jose Torres’ Bearcats took the field in Game 1, and Cameron Kitt was perfect in the Top of the 1st, striking out all 3 batters he faced. Kitt continued his good pitching in the next inning, by keeping Old Westbury off the scoreboard.

The Bearcats would score a run in the bottom of the 2nd on an error, as Edwin St. Hilaire reached on an error and scored two batters later on an error.

This Week at MCU Park: 2/19/2017 & Travel Advisories

CollegeExactly 5 months to the day since Team Israel won the Qualifying game of the final World Baseball Classic Qualifier, baseball will finally be returning to MCU Park.

On Saturday, the Baruch College Bearcats will face off against the SUNY – Old Westbury Panthers to open the season. This will also be a chance for a rare February baseball game in New York City.

The opening game of the doubleheader will start at 12:00 PM, with the second game scheduled for 3:00 PM. Admission to the games are free, with gates opening around 11:30 AM.

WBC to Feature 29 Mets/Cyclones

2017-wbcThe rosters have been released for the upcoming World Baseball Classic which begins in March & there are 29 names spread among 10 national teams that should be familiar to New York Mets & Brooklyn Cyclones fans.

Leading the way is Team Puerto Rico, featuring 7 men who played for the Mets. In second is the victor of MCU Park’s qualifier, Team Israel, with 5 Mets players and one coach.

The YU Maccabees’ “Alternative Stats”

As many of my loyal reads known, Brooklyn Baseball Banter is devoted to covering the Brooklyn Cyclones and some of the other teams that call MCU Park “home.” I wrote this article, but was unable to find a site to run it, so I decided to post it here.

On January 25th, 2017 the Yeshiva University Athletic Department put out a release on their website stating that the Hod Brothers, (Jordan, Justin, and Tyler) set a NCAA Division III first by having all three brothers appear as teammates in the same basketball game.* They also set a first for as all being on the court at the exact same time. This was met with some great publicity for the boys from Teaneck, NJ.

There is just one problem: It has happened before. It happened during the previous basketball season. It even happened in the same city.

Baseball Returns to Coney Island in Two Weeks!

BaruchIn just a mere fortnight, baseball will finally return to MCU Park after 5 long months.

The Baruch College Bearcats will open the college baseball season on Saturday, February 25th with a doubleheader against the SUNY РOld Westbury Panthers. First pitch for the first game will be at 12 PM with the 2nd game starting roughly half an hour after the first.

The AccuWeather forecast currently calls for February 25th to be in the mid-50s with no rain, perfect weather for spring baseball.

Former Cyclones Bat Boy Joey Goffstein Joins YU Macs

joey-goffstein-yuJoey Goffstein, who served as Head Bat Boy of the Brooklyn Cyclones in 2014 & 2015, has joined the Yeshiva University Macabees Baseball Team for the 2017 College Baseball Season.

Joey will wear #3 on his jersey and play the outfield. He bats & throws right handed.

The Macabees will come in to MCU Park on Tuesday, April 25th for a doubleheader that begins at 5:00 PM.

Joey recently spoke with Brooklyn Baseball Banter’s Daniel Weiss about the upcoming season.
